Me and a friend plan on being there.
He want's to know if they'll run the lifts to get folks to the upper part of the hill?

Now that would be very cool. I could handle a garbage bag on my board on the way down!

Amazing to think about how much snow will still be up top. I will be there if it's not a downpour like last year.

yeah, would be an improvement over the standard douche bag on your board

(sorry, couldn't resist)

This thread reminds me of a mid season exchange of words with some stereotypical teen douche bag on the lift at Ski Acres rip Bonanza (you know, "Central" & "Express", after he chucked his Tecate can off into the snow. Being high and almost mighty I suggested he hang onto it next time and dump it at the top, or better yet crush it and stick it on/in his person for recycle. The vibe got unpleasantly thick when he started saying fuck and any other explicit he could come up with, telling me to mind my own b.s. "bro" because, "they pay people to pick up the trash at the resort every summer". it is "bro" isn't it?

LOL!

I'm a litterbug-caller-outer in the city, it's my number two most favoritest chump to ridicule (next to fixed-gear jesters)...and of course, in the real woods, I'm like comeon blud nobody's getting away with that shit--fuckin I'm anti apple core and banana peel tossing even...

BUT: Alpental is like a movie theater or the ballpark to me. Litter all you want. SRSLY. Do the mathZ and realize how silly it is for a motherfucker to drive up there, don his head-to-toe 3M plastic gear, strap on a plastic/old growth snowpickle, and ride a diesel-powered merry-go-round all day...and then complain about a beercan... or, just go there in the summer and check it out: stumps, crete chunks, general ugliness abounds...

I'm serious.

the ocean thing is like totally different, too, because it's not the surfers who are dirtying up the water (except that stand-up paddle shit WTF izzat blud?)

Serious.

I think it should be kept clean, of course, but I think the operators should do it. Free passes, reserved parking, iono...

but, the shit is mad ugly already, it's just like picking the nuts offa turd or something...still shitty, right? If you really cared about the trees and the birdies and the squatches up there, you'd be lobbying to shut it down.

fuuuuuuuuck I went and got coffee, it's been two days without...sorry

by the time I got there, the others were cleaning east/central/west and parking lot/creek beds but not too many were hiking up. I saw one another who hiked up under ch1 up to the creek and he had a full bag. I picked up few he missed and went around the creek and picked up so much before that steep pitch, I decided to go dump it at the top of ch3. there I picked up more trash and left a full bag at the top of ch3. hiked to top of ch1 by cat track (it was all snow above ch3) and made a full bag at the top of ch1. then I hiked down under ch1 to the top of steep pitch that's roped off and by then I was carrying a full bag. walking down on slushy snow with trash bag was scary, but really glad to know that I cleaned up pretty much entire ch1 lift line. (well, by lift towers and whatever was on top of the snow. I'm sure there are more under the snow.) I was hungry, but I missed the bbq by the time I got to the bottom...

I wish more people showed up, but it was nice to see few people skinning up and still making turns. I bet it was fun at the top today. snow was cold and fast at top of ch1.

Went over to Hyak and helped clean up the parking lot, around the lodge, and the lower hill about 1/4th of the way up Kechelus chair. Biggest thing found was a bashed up kitchen range that someone had dumped.
Interesting things brought in for the "weird stuff" contest: Bras and a pile of mardi-gras beads, full and still sealed bottle of champagne, several cellphones, the hood off a pickup truck, a broken table, and a wheelbarrow and a huge wadded up ball of xmas lights.

Thanks for hiking up to get more of the on-hill junk Mokes, too bad you missed the BBQ.
In addition to burgers and chicken they had a nice selection of freebies to hand out to the volunteers: T-shirts, hats, posters (incl the 1971 photo of Alpy valley), a long-board deck, snowboard boots, bindings, and even a couple of pairs of skis along with a bunch of other one-off leftovers from the store.

The iffy morning weather kept folks away I think. It looked worse on the radar than it actually was since the raindrops evaporated before hitting the ground.

those prizes are awesome. I wish I was there for that, but they hooked me up with the belt buckle. also, I didn't find anything cool, odd, valuable... I did find a set of rusty keys with la fitness membership. maybe I will turn it in.

I thought that was your bike T. I was one of the guys hiking around the hill up there. I filled up a full bag of cans and bottles up in lot 4, and then a few bags of general garbage as I walked around up on the hill.

The bags of dogshit really blew me away though. Who in the fuck is gonna pick up their dogs shit on the trail, just to toss it in to the snow bank in the parking lot? I don't get it. Fucking gross.

Duke, the issue is that everything flows downstream. There is nothing cool about rusting beer cans getting in to the rivers. Nothing. And fucking cigarette butts. Don't people get that they are fiberglass, and will continue to pollute for 10,000 years.

Our impact was minimal to say the least, but at least somebody is trying.

there's just something weird about it though, don't you think? Some part of an outside volunteer group cleaning up after a for-profit company just seems off... I'd prefer The Summit to raise ticket prices, and put a big thing on their site like, "we had to, to offset the mega garbage piles you fools left on the hill." Transfer the cost of the problem a little more directly to the litterers...

Some of us just hate seeing the trash so much that we are willing to pick it up.

Unfortunately, your "raise prices and pay for cleanup" idea punishes everyone else and the scofflaws would just laugh it off and continue to toss thier trash on the ground. (externalization of costs and all)
Wish that stupidity and inconsideration hurt the perpetrator more and more often than they do.

One of the questions everyone has to answer for themselves in life is if they want to be primarily a member of the army of Order, or the mob of Chaos. (note: NOT right/wrong or good/evil. There's just as much bad in excessive order as chaos.)
Finding your personal set-point on this continuum is part of growing up.

Crap, that's too philosophical ain't it? - Here's some chaos to balance it out.

yeah that was my bike and riding it up and down the pass sucked. first, it got wet as soon as I exit at the top of the pass. (should have known...) then after carrying those trash bags, my arms got tired and I had to worry about my ride down the pass. I didn't bring my snowskate and I think that was a smart idea.

I also saw prisoners picking up trash next to i-90 that day. so its ok to litter as long as someone else's going to pick it up for you?

think of it as a big public skate park. just because park and recreation dept is responsible for cleaning up and maintenance of the park system, you know you wouldn't trash it such as tossing beer bottles in a bowl.

and if you see a kid does it while saying "someone else is getting paid to clean this up", you would clean up the mess yourself using his face.

anyway, I used to pick up trash only when I in my uniform, but I think I'm gonna start picking them up even when I'm not working...

I have a hard time thinking of it as "a big public skatepark," what with the 50 dollar lift tickets...
